Student Council Gives Back

2020 has proven to be a very challenging year for everyone. Plans have been changed, events have been cancelled, and there have been struggles. Yet through it all God has provided ways for LCL to remain open and in person. The daily  routine looks much different this year but the mission remains the same: to teach Truth and spread the good news of the Gospel.

One group that has continued its mission this year is Student Council. Student Council (StuCo) is comprised of students from all grades that are broken up into various committees. Those committees are School Spirit led by Beth Martin and Sai Kanuru, Christian Outreach led by Failenn O’Donnell, Art and Publicity led by Sarah Roeglin, and Special events led by Caroline Daniels and Elsa Ravaris. The supervisors are Mrs. Griepentrog and Mr. Hollander. Each group has an important role in the planning of school events and outreach. School Spirit focuses on sports, pep rallies, and competitions. Christian Outreach organizes Student Council chapel, devotions, food drives, and other various outreach opportunities in the community. Art and Publicity makes posters, artwork, and announcements to keep the student body up to date. That committee works hand in hand with Special Events whose job it is to plan dances and other school wide events such as homecoming and winter spirit weeks.

All in all, this year has kept the Student Council representatives busy and pushed them to use their creative minds to provide an exciting school year, while still working through the obstacles that 2020 has thrown at them.Since Covid presented some challenges when it came to Homecoming, StuCo came up with the creative solution to host it on the football field which the student body ended up loving. Bethany Lutheran Church in Milwaukee has been in fellowship with LCL for several years now. They depend on food and monetary donations to provide support for their members. Bethany needs help now more than ever as their members largely work part-time jobs and depend on hourly wages that have been severely cut this year due to Covid. Christian Outreach made it a priority to help them in every way possible.

In addition to a Thanksgiving food drive, Stuco is held another food drive going into the Christmas season which included food donations, candy cane grams that are being sold, Christmas ornament decorating to be placed into food bags, and the Penny Wars fundraiser which is a class competition to see who can raise the most money.

As an incentive to give to the penny wars, this year Mrs. G has generously offered to dye her hair whatever color the winning class chooses. We were able to raise $192.82 from the penny wars and $24 from the candy cane grams which is a blessing that we are incredibly thankful for. All the profit from these various fundraisers will be given to Bethany to buy fresh meat and produce during the Christmas season.

Athletic seasons look very different this year. Even so School Spirit has pulled together the annual spike ball and Super Smash Bros tournaments, which were big hits, as well as a pep rally and coed sports events. Special Events and Art and Publicity have wrapped up Homecoming and Christmas/finals week and are looking forward to 2021.

1st semester was a huge accomplishment for both the school and for StuCo. We look forward to another semester and wish everyone a very Merry Christmas. LCL is truly blessed and thankful for all of the opportunities that the school has been given this year.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  -Philippians 4:6-7
