Lutheran School Impact: We Teach Truth..But How?

We Teach Truth.

What comes across as a simple statement often leads to a number of different questions, especially in the culture we currently live in.  Which truth? Whose truth? Does Truth even exist? These are all questions one could simply ask us (the LHSAGM) as we share our Brand message with people unfamiliar to us.

As a science teacher, specifically in the subject of Biology at Lake Country Lutheran High School I have the privilege of sharing the truth of God as the Creator of the Universe and the amazing life that inhabits our planet. As an association of schools that draws upon the Holy Bible as the one source of truth we get to share with students the fact that we are Fearfully and Wonderfully made (Pslam139:14).

Recently I asked my freshman Biology students to write down one tough question they have about God, the Bible, or Christianity and the number of different questions I received was astonishing. As a school that attracts students from a wide range of elementary schools ranging from public to private to parochial the questions covered a wide range of inquiries. “What is God?” asked one student.  “How do we know the Bible is 100% true?” wrote another. “What is my purpose?”, such honest and genuine questions filled my stack of papers. I had to share these questions with my fellow teachers and so I did. This list has started a robust conversation among teachers on our staff about how we supply the answers to the questions students have. One math teacher said, “I want to stop teaching my subject matter and just start answering these questions but I can’t!”.

The good news is, we have, we do, and will continue to answer these questions. The LHSAGM seeks to share the Truth of God’s word with every student that walks our hallways and sits in our classrooms. How that is done definitely differs from subject to subject and teacher to teacher but the message is the same, God’s Word (the Bible) is Truth. As a Biology teacher, not only do I instruct students about the living world from a Biblical worldview, but I have the opportunity to engage my students with devotionals and prayer on a regular basis. As we study Biology, we study the very design God made at Creation. To know study the art is to better understand the artist is another way of thinking about it.

As we walk with our students over four years of high school in the classroom, on the field, or through the performance hall, we are blessed to Teach Truth at every turn. It just so happens my venue is the Science lab, and for that I am eternally grateful.

In Christ,

Chris Irish
